GOVERNMENT SCHEMES FOR WOMEN
There were several government schemes in India aimed at empowering women and improving their socio-economic status. However, it’s essential to note that government policies and schemes may have evolved or changed since then. Here are some of the prominent schemes at that time:
Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) Yojana
This scheme focused on improving the declining child sex ratio and promoting the education of the girl child. It aimed to address issues related to female foeticide, provide better education opportunities, and ensure the overall welfare of girls.
Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY)
This maternity benefit program aimed to provide financial assistance to pregnant and lactating women. It sought to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates by providing monetary support during the critical stages of pregnancy and childbirth.
Mahila e-Haat
Launched by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, this online platform encouraged women entrepreneurs and artisans to showcase and sell their products. It provided them with a digital marketplace to expand their businesses.
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana
This savings scheme was designed to secure the future of the girl child. Parents or guardians could open an account in the name of the girl child, and it offered attractive interest rates and tax benefits.
Ujjwala Yojana
Although not exclusively for women, this scheme aimed to provide clean cooking fuel to women living below the poverty line. It distributed free LPG connections to eligible beneficiaries, reducing the health hazards associated with traditional cooking methods.
Working Women Hostel Scheme
This scheme aimed to provide safe and affordable accommodation for working women who migrate to cities for employment or education purposes.
STEP (Support to Training and Employment Programme for Women)
This initiative focused on providing vocational training and skill development opportunities to women, enabling them to enter the workforce or start their businesses.
National Mission for Empowerment of Women (NMEW)
