Asian Games 2022: India breaks 27-year Canoe medal drought at Asiad with historic win

In the final, which took place on the banks of the Fuyang River, Arjun Singh, 16 years old, and Sunil Singh, 24 years old, finished in third place in three events

India won a bronze medal in the sprint canoe racing event at the 19th Asian Games as Arjun Singh and Sunil Singh Salam finished third in the men’s 1000m canoe pair at the Aquatics Center Fuyang on Tuesday.

In the final, which took place on the banks of the Fuyang River, Arjun Singh, 16 years old, and Sunil Singh, 24 years old, finished in third place in three events: 53,329 behind gold medalist Uzbekistan (3: 43,796) and Kazakhstan, silver medal (3: 49,991).
The Indian duo started well and took first place in the 250m event, completing the event in 53. 92 seconds. But Uzbek and Kazakh rowers overtook them and Arjun and Sunil Singh were in third place at the halfway mark. They maintained their position.

This was the second Asian Games for Sunil C-2 men’s 1000m in 2018 in Indonesia, finishing sixth overall. He is a very experienced rower, having competed in the C-2 1000m and C-1 2000m events at the 2019 and 2023 World Championships as well as at the World Cups.

On the other hand, this is only the second international event for 16-year-old Arjun Singh.
Earlier this year, he competed at the World Championships in Duisburg, Germany, finishing 9th in the men’s 1000m C-2.

India’s medal tally at Asian Games 2022

This took India’s total medal tally to 61, with 13 gold, 24 silver and 24 bronze.
