World Cup 2023: ICC explains DRS controversy in Pakistan vs South Africa match

Van der Dussen's frustration was palpable as he departed after scoring just 21 runs, a crucial wicket as South Africa pursued a target of 271 runs.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) found itself in the midst of a contentious LBW decision involving Rassie van der Dussen, prompting a clarification on social media. The incident occurred during the 19th over of South Africa’s chase against Pakistan. On-field umpire Paul Reiffel had adjudged Van der Dussen out after a delivery from Usama Mir struck his pads. While the ball’s trajectory might have suggested it missed the stumps, Reiffel’s decision stood, leading to the South African batsman opting for a review.

How DRS is used

The Decision Review System (DRS) revealed two different ball-tracking scenarios, a rather unusual occurrence. The initial tracking indicated that the ball might have missed the leg stump, but shortly after, a second tracking showed it hitting the stump. The DRS umpire deemed the second tracking as the final decision, leading to van der Dussen’s dismissal. This decision sparked controversy, as it appeared that the initial graphic and the final outcome contradicted each other.

Questions over umpire’s call in DRS

Van der Dussen’s frustration was palpable as he departed after scoring just 21 runs, a crucial wicket as South Africa pursued a target of 271 runs. His dismissal marked a turning point in the game, as it opened the door for the Babar Azam-led Pakistan side to make further breakthroughs, dismissing Heinrich Klaasen in the very next over.

The incident stirred up debate on social media, with South African fans seeking explanations from both the ICC and the broadcasting team. The ICC, in response, issued a statement acknowledging the erroneous display of the initial graphic during the LBW review of Rassie van der Dussen. They confirmed that the correct graphic was eventually shown, leading to the right decision.

Pakistan also faces same DRS issue

This LBW controversy wasn’t the only instance of DRS scrutiny in the match. In the latter stages, Pakistan’s Haris Rauf trapped Tabraiz Shamsi in front of the stumps, with the on-field umpire deeming it not out. Pakistan took a review, and the replays suggested that the ball was pitching in line and would have hit the stumps. However, the umpire’s call ruling was not in favor of Pakistan, denying them a crucial wicket.

South Africa clinch thriller at MA Chidambaram

The match eventually concluded with Keshav Maharaj smashing a boundary in the 48th over, guiding South Africa to a historic one-wicket victory. South Africa now tops the table, while Pakistan faces the looming threat of elimination in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
