IND vs SL World Cup 2023: Bumrah creates WC records as Virat Kohli misses out on century

Virat Kohli came close to matching Sachin Tendulkar's record of 49 ODI centuries but narrowly missed out once again.

Jasprit Bumrah created history during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Sri Lanka when he became the first Indian bowler to take a wicket with the very first ball of a team’s innings in a World Cup game. Virat Kohli, on the other hand, missed out century.

Bumrah’s remarkable first delivery resulted in Pathum Nissanka being dismissed LBW, with the ball swinging sharply and striking Nissanka’s pads high, leading to an umpire’s decision in favor of out. Despite Sri Lanka reviewing the decision, it was confirmed that the ball was clipping the left stump’s bails.

Virat Kohli misses Sachin’s record equalizer century

In the same match, Virat Kohli came close to matching Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries but narrowly missed out once again. Kohli scored 88 runs from 94 balls and formed a significant partnership of 189 runs for the second wicket with Shubman Gill, who looked impressive with his 92 off 92 balls.

Despite these strong performances, none of the three Indian batsmen, including Kohli, Gill, and Iyer, managed to reach a century due to the exceptional bowling performance by Sri Lankan bowler Dilshan Madushanka. Madushanka took 5 wickets for 80 runs in his 10 overs, with his deliveries including effective slower cutters and bouncers.

Kohli and Gill established a solid foundation for the innings, setting the highest partnership for any wicket in the World Cup for India, accumulating 189 runs from 179 balls for the second wicket. Kohli was poised to equal Tendulkar’s record but was dismissed for 88, while Gill narrowly missed his century with a run-a-ball 92, which included 11 fours and two sixes.
