Virat Kohli, the Indian cricket star, expressed his emotions and gratitude after equalling his idol Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI centuries during the 2023 World Cup match against South Africa. Kohli’s unbeaten 101 from 121 balls played a pivotal role in India’s total of 326 for 5 and their subsequent 243-run victory over South Africa. This significant achievement occurred on Kohli’s 35th birthday.

In a video shared by the BCCI, Kohli spoke about the emotional significance of this accomplishment, saying, “Quite an emotional thing for me. I grew up idolising him, and I aspired to play for India, watching him play, and just equal his record in ODIs was a surreal moment for me. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would get here, so I just feel blessed and grateful.”

On the day he matched his idol’s record of 49 ODI centuries, Kohli acknowledged that he will never be in the league of the great Sachin Tendulkar, who will always be his No.1.

“As I said in the post-match, for me, he is always going to be No. 1, regardless of whatever happens. I am just happy that my journey has come so far and I have been able to make it here and able to win games for my country like he did,” Kohli added.

Sachin Tendulkar responded with a congratulatory message on X, saying, “Well played Virat. It took me 365 days to go from 49 to 50 earlier this year. I hope you go from 49 to 50 and break my record in the next few days. Congratulations!!”

Kohli replied to Sachin Tendulkar’s message by expressing his aspiration to achieve his 50th century during the semi-final or final of the ongoing ICC tournament, aligning with the legendary batsman’s wish.

Virat Kohli’s response

“I aspire to the same thing because if I do that, that means we have good chances of winning. So I would love to do it a few more times in this tournament, especially in the big ones, in the semis and the final, yes, fingers crossed. Hopefully, I can do that,” Kohli said in response to Sachin Tendulkar’s tweet on his 49th century.
