India wins, hammer England in Dharamsala to win Test series 4-1

Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made his 100th Test match memorable with a five-wicket haul while Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah picked two wickets each as the tourists succumbed before the hosts. 

India wins the fifth and final Test in Dharamsala after hammering England by innings and 64 runs at the HPCA Stadium to win the five-match series 4-1.

Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made his 100th Test match memorable with a five-wicket haul while Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah picked two wickets each each as the tourists succumbed before the hosts.

On Satuday, ther third day of the fifth Test, the hosts were bowled out for 477 in their first innings. With this, India took a healthy 259-run lead against the tourists. In their second innings, the English batters failed to put up a fight and were eventually bowled out for just 195 runs.

Commenting on the win, skipper Rohit Sharma praised his bowlers and youngsters, saying: “When you win a Test like this, everything has to fall in place. At some stage people are gonna and people are gonna come and we know that. These guys are maybe short of experience, they have played a lot of cricket and I can stand here and see that these guys responded pretty well under pressure.”

“The credit goes to the entire team and it was pleasing to see. When you win a series like this, we talk about scoring runs and 100s but it is important to take 20 wickets to win a Test. The way bowlers took responsibility was pleasing to see,” he added.”

Following a setback in the initial Test of the series in Hyderabad, the Indian team demonstrated resilience by clinching victories in all subsequent four matches. The hosts, thereby accumulated a total of six Test wins in this phase of the World Test Championship (WTC).

Brief Scores: England 218 and 195 in 48.1 overs (Joe Root 84; Ravichandran Ashwin 5-77) lost to India 477 in 124.1 overs (Shubman Gill 110, Rohit Sharma 103; Shoaib Bashir 5-173, James Anderson 2-60) by an innings and 64 runs.
