Gurugram: In a bid to bolster flood-preparedness measures ahead of the monsoon season, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) have decided to work in close coordination to address waterlogging and traffic issues across Gurugram.

A high-level meeting was held on Wednesday at the NHAI Headquarters in Dwarka, chaired by NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav and attended by GMDA CEO Shyamal Misra, along with senior officials from both departments.

The meeting focused on collaborative strategies to mitigate flooding in critical areas during heavy rains.

One of the major concerns discussed was the persistent issue of waterlogging at Narsinghpur. GMDA officials informed that a temporary ‘Kachcha’ drain has been constructed to divert stormwater from Narsinghpur to the Leg 3 Badshahpur drain. To support this effort, the NHAI committed to cleaning three culverts in the area on a priority basis to ensure the effective discharge of rainwater.

Several key flood-prone locations under NHAI’s jurisdiction were also identified, including Iffco Chowk, Medanta Underpass, Rajiv Chowk, and Hero Honda Chowk up to Umang Bhardwaj Chowk. The NHAI has been instructed to clean all surface drains in these critical areas to prevent flood-like conditions during the peak monsoon.

In a show of inter-agency collaboration, GMDA pledged full support to NHAI in executing flood-mitigation measures. Both teams will jointly expedite actions to ensure the maintenance of a clean and efficient drainage network across vulnerable locations.

Apart from flood management, the meeting also addressed the issue of severe traffic congestion at key junctions such as Rajiv Chowk and Shankar Chowk. NHAI will undertake a feasibility study aimed at identifying solutions for easing traffic flow, including the exploration of new routes, infrastructure development, and other necessary interventions. The study will also examine congestion along the service road near Ambience Mall.

“Directives were issued to the concerned teams of both the departments to regularly coordinate and undertake joint action in order to accelerate the efforts being taken up for ensuring safe monsoons for the residents,” said a senior GMDA official.
