Gurugram Police file FIR against Sudarshan News editor over ‘fake news’

Haryana Violence: An FIR was filed on Thursday against Mukesh Kumar, the resident editor of Sudarshan News, for allegedly posting false information on Twitter about Kala Ramachandran, the commissioner of the Gurugram police.

According to the Gurugram Police, Kumar was arrested on Thursday and lodged at the Cyber Crime Police Station (East) Gurugram under sections 66-C, 153B, 401, 469, and 505 (1) (C) of the IT Act.

“The tweet was done based on baseless, untrue and misleading facts from Twitter handle @mukeshkrd on August 8. Taking cognizance of this, the Gurugram Police has registered a case and further investigation into the matter is underway,” the Gurugram Police said in a statement.

In a tweet, Kumar claimed that the Gurugram Police commissioner had received a call from the Al Jazeera News Channel and was under pressure to take action against Hindus.

The Gurugram Police Chief allegedly came under such much pressure after receiving the call, according to Kumar, that she launched a crackdown on members of Hindutva organisations.

The FIR was filed a few days after communal riots rocked the Gurugram and Nuh districts of Haryana.

The government imposed a curfew and shut down mobile internet access in Nuh, Palwal, Hodal, and Sohna as a result of the violence.
