Over the last few decades, India has been locked in a struggle with China for supremacy over the Indian Ocean. Now India has taken a major step towardsasserting its dominance in the Indian Ocean region with theย constructionย ofย twoย militaryย airfieldsย inย Lakshadweep.
Expertsย sayย thatย theย constructionย ofย twoย militaryย airfieldsย inย Lakshadweepย addressesย contemporaryย issuesย includingย supplyย chainย securityย asย wellย asย persistentย classicย andย non-traditionalย securityย threats.
Inย anย effortย toย improveย theย armedย forces’ย operationalย capabilitiesย inย theย region,ย theย Indianย governmentย hasย sanctionedย theย constructionย ofย twoย militaryย airfieldsย inย theย Lakshadweepย islands. Theย plan,ย whichย wasย approvedย underย theย tri-servicesย concept,ย callsย forย extendingย theย currentย Agattiย islandย facilityย andย buildingย anย airbaseย onย Minicoy.
“Theseย airfieldsย willย strategicallyย extendย India’sย militaryย reachย deepย intoย theย Indianย Ocean,”ย saidย retiredย Airย Marshalย Gย Sย Bedi told the media.
Bedi hadย helpedย planย theirย expansionย whileย servingย asย Seniorย Airย Staffย Officerย at theย Southernย Navalย Command.
Bediย notedย theย logisticalย issuesย thatย India’sย aircraftย confrontย whenย takingย offย fromย continentalย coastsย likeย Cochinย orย Trivandrum,ย suchย asย refuelingย duringย missionsย andย lengthyย oceanย monitoring.
Heย suggestedย thatย havingย twoย militaryย airfields in Lakshadweepย whereย aircraftย mayย takeย off,ย refuel,ย andย landย afterย missionsย wouldย considerablyย improveย defenseย capabilities.

Bediย emphasizedย thatย Indiaย hasย carefullyย studiedย logisticsย toย guaranteeย thatย theย airfieldsย satisfyย essentialย standardsย whileย seamlesslyย integratingย intoย theย surroundingย topographyย andย logisticalย structure,ย withย dueย regardย forย maritimeย andย aviationย traffic.
Theย Airย Marshalย admitsย probableย problems,ย suchย asย fuel,ย weaponry,ย andย otherย equipmentย maintenanceย requirements,ย butย claimsย thatย “theseย challengesย areย surmountable.”
Theย airstripsย “willย alsoย extendย India’sย operationalย reach,ย servingย asย criticalย assetsย deployedย forย variousย roles,ย includingย surveillanceย missions,”ย Bediย toldย reporters.
