Tata to manufacture military aircraft for IAF by 2026

By 2026, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) hopes to launch its first Grob G 180 aircraft, marking a major milestone in the country’s defence manufacturing industry. This high-altitude, twin-engine aircraft will be modified to function as an Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) platform, which is an essential tool for contemporary armed forces including the Indian Air Force (IAF).

A calculated strategic maneuver saw the German-origin Grob G 180 SPn platform, which was never put into full production, have its intellectual property rights purchased by the Tata Group in 2021. TASL intends to use this basis to design and produce a military aircraft that is native to India and meets Indian specifications.

With a flight height of up to 45,000 feet, a range of 1,800 nautical miles, and an endurance of six to seven hours, the Grob G 180 has exceptional capabilities. Over 1,000 kilograms of cargo may be carried by the aircraft, which is capable of carrying a significant array of sensors and equipment.

Its adaptability is increased by the fact that it may run from grass or gravel airstrips. Being an ELINT platform, the aircraft will be able to collect, decipher, and process electronic signals in order to provide vital intelligence regarding the intentions, capabilities, and actions of enemies. An important turning point for the Indian private sector has been reached with TASL’s entry into the military aircraft market.
