Why Balochistan is turning into graveyard for Pakistan Army

Asif Ali Zardari, the president of Pakistan, is in Gwadar during the third decade of the fifth insurgency that has been going on in Balochistan since 1947. During his 2009 presidential tenure, Zardari attempted to buy off the Baloch with a package of political and economic concessions known as “Aaghaz-e-Huqooq-e-Balochistan.”

Zardari is attempting to connect with the Baloch once more, but as usual, he is doing it with hollow words and false promises, after his disastrous attempt to appease their sentiments failed.

He has advocated for political discourse throughout his stay in an effort to bring prosperity, growth, and peace to the unrest-plagued region.

He has also advocated for strengthening the capabilities of law enforcement organizations. Anyone who studies Balochistan will see the inconsistency in his message: the biggest threat to peace in the province is the lawlessness of the so-called “law enforcement” and security agencies, which are responsible for networks of extortion, kidnapping, smuggling, drug trafficking, and human trafficking.

Furthermore, the Punjab-dominated Pakistani administration prefers to have talks with those who would follow their lead and continue to be obedient to the Punjabi establishment rather than with actual Baloch representatives.

Because of this, Balochistan has burned continuously since Pakistan invaded it under duress in 1948. Ever since, Pakistan has maintained its tight grip on Balochistan, albeit with the use of extreme force and censorship that would make the Chinese blush.

Nobody anticipated that the most recent and longest episode of Baloch rage against Pakistan’s neo-colonial exploitative and extractive authority would last more than a few years, beginning around 2001.

However, the 2006 assassination of the esteemed Bugti leader, Nawab Akbar Bugti, significantly bolstered the Baloch movement. The movement has since rolled onward despite ebbing and flowing.

The Baloch liberation movement has picked up speed and changed course throughout the previous three years, particularly since the Afghan Taliban loosened the “shackles of slavery” held by Pakistanis and Americans alike. Of course, it would appear that the Baloch movement has lost momentum if one were to look via Pakistan’s mainstream media. This is mostly due to the military’s crackdown on the media to halt the spread of false information. However, this does not imply that there is nothing going on in the real world.

The truth is that the Baloch movement is growing more and more dangerous. Though it hasn’t quite reached the breaking point where it poses a threat to Pakistan’s borders or constitutional order, it is certainly making progress in that direction, helped greatly by the increasing chaos and discontent that the country is experiencing.

There are two parallel avenues via which the turmoil in Balochistan is manifesting itself. These are both wholly indigenous and organic.

The rest of the world doesn’t seem to be interested in listening to the Baloch people’s complaints, much less providing them with material or financial support.

Of course, there is the violent path taken by young Baloch, who challenge the power of the Pakistan Army by eclipsing social and ethnic boundaries. Both the frequency and the intensity of their attacks on the Pakistani state and its mercenaries in uniform have increased in recent years.

The second path consists of nonviolent demonstrations, mass mobilization, and resistance via civil disobedience. People are more motivated than ever thanks to the protest track, as evidenced by the thousands of people who turned out in the streets at the Haq Do Tehrik in Gwadar to demand their fundamental right to life and livelihood.

The Haq Do Tehrik persisted for months in the face of the customary misbehaviors of the state apparatus, which was commanded by the Pakistan Army and used every tactic known to man—bribes, threats, violent crackdowns—to undermine public confidence. Ultimately, the state was forced to accede to the requests.

However, as is customary with colonial occupants, they never lived up to their end of the agreement. These betrayals of nonviolent rallies serve to strengthen the terrorists’ claims that the Pakistani government can only be forced to terminate its harsh and oppressive rule through armed resistance.

The same thing occurred with the Long March to Islamabad, which was spearheaded by the tenacious young campaigner Dr. Mahrang Baloch. In a really democratic nation, the government in Islamabad would have engaged in communication with the demonstrators in addition to granting them the right to protest.

However, Pakistan’s hybrid government, which is headed by the military-manipulated puppet prime minister Shehbaz Sharif, has abandoned even the appearance of democracy.

Dr. Mahrang Baloch became a legendary figure in Balochistan despite her pleas that the Pakistani security forces stop forcing people to disappear and carrying out extrajudicial killings, including massacres.

There was little doubt that a new star, indeed a new leader, had been found based on the enormous crowds that flocked to see her when she returned.

In Balochistan, where women activists are taking on leadership roles in a very conservative and traditional society, the emergence of activists such as Dr. Mahrang Baloch is in and of itself a significant development.

The fact that women are not just spearheading political demonstrations but are actively engaged in militancy is even more astounding.

Nobody ever expected the phenomena of highly educated Baloch women activists turning into suicide bombers.

Maybe the reason these women took such a severe action was their extreme hopelessness and despair.

Baloch women, both young and elderly, have been protesting and calling for the return of their husbands, sons, fathers, and brothers who were taken prisoner by Pakistani security forces for over ten years. Most likely the Pakistan Army slaughtered them.

Numerous cases have been reported of activists’ disfigured bodies being dumped on the side of the road after they were forced to disappear.

Even a few mass graves have been found in some instances. However, the Baloch have never found closure, which has kept militancy alive.

Young Baloch activists and students who are enrolled in universities in Punjab and other provinces have “vanished” even as of late. Reports of professionals, homeowners, and youths being forcibly disappeared by security personnel surface every other day.

Sarfraz Bugti, the current Chief Minister of Balochistan, is infamous for being a total puppet of the military establishment and for allegedly having ties to death squads that are funded and sanctioned by the state and who target and murder Baloch activists.

Now, he is promising the populace that he would initiate a fresh reconciliation process. But there are no bites. Nobody has faith in him.

Still, there are indications of mounting concern inside the military establishment. They haven’t been able to quell the anger and fervor of the Baloch people, who continue to fight to free themselves from the bonds of enslavement imposed by Pakistan, despite their brutality and the thousands of people who have been killed or forcibly disappeared by the security forces. And there is a growing militaristic and political consensus on this issue.

The risks to the Pakistani state have increased due to reports of covert, possibly tactical, and transient partnerships between certain militant organizations from Balochistan and the Pakistani Taliban. The prospect of a combined Baloch and Pashtun resistance against a common enemy is quite dreadful for Pakistan and the region, despite the ideological differences between the two sides (the Baloch are progressive and security-oriented, while the Taliban are regressive and Islamists).

The political movement to overthrow the Pakistani government is gathering momentum at the same time as the militancy is. Of course, the escalating situation in Balochistan is being ignored by the mainstream media in Pakistan. However, this does not imply that nothing is happening—just because the media is not covering it.

In actuality, Pakistan has long struggled with this issue. People learn of a calamity only after it is too late, as a result of the military’s silencing of the media. Social media may be able to help with some of this. However, there is an attempt to impose China-style censorship even here.

Ironically, the Israeli action against Hamas and the widespread anti-Semitic, pro-Palestine, even pro-Hamas protests on US college campuses have equally angered and inspired Pakistanis. However, the repression that the Punjabis have unleashed against the Baloch and Pashtuns has not elicited even a whine of complaint from these same students, human rights activists, media representatives, or members of civil society inside Pakistan.

In truth, groups of Punjabi students, the most of whom support Jamaat Islami, have been attacking Baloch and Pashtun students on university campuses for no other reason than to celebrate their own culture. These mobs have the support of the military establishment and the university administration.

Rather of employing demonstrations and nonviolent resistance in Balochistan to initiate political action and involve the representatives of the Baloch, the Pakistan Army has opted to employ force and impose their own scapegoats, such as Sarfraz Bugti, in order to silence any dissenting voices. However, that is simply making people more hostile toward Pakistan and exacerbating an already dire situation.

The incapacity of the Baloch to come together under a single political and military leadership has been the one thing that has worked for Pakistan thus far. Due to the petty egos of tribal chiefs, their rivalries and feuds with one another, and the provision of small favors and authority to sway otherwise discredited “nationalist” politicians, Pakistan is able to divide and dominate. Pakistan’s colonial strategy and policy of genocide in Balochistan will persist until the Baloch people are able to come together under a single banner.
