Historically, the Soviet Union supplied India with a large amount of its defense equipment, much of which was produced in what is now Ukraine. Ukraine continues to be an essential partner for India in maintaining and modernizing these defensive systems, even in the wake of the disintegration of the Soviet Union.
The Indian Navy’s procurement of gas turbine engines is one of the most important parts of this partnership. These engines are produced by the state-owned Ukrainian business Zorya-Mashproekt and are used to power a variety of Indian warships. It is impossible to overestimate the significance of dependable and efficient propulsion systems as India’s naval capabilities grow. Officials said that Zorya-Mashproekt is in talks to work with private sector companies in India to co-manufacture gas turbines. This possible partnership might strengthen India’s domestic defense production capabilities and result in a major transfer of technologies.
In addition to providing a consistent supply for the Indian Navy, the joint production of gas turbines would support India’s larger “Make in India” campaign, which attempts to promote domestic manufacturing in order to lessen reliance on imports.
