Kashmir: Indian Army soldier, Pakistani killed in Kupwara encounter

An encounter with terrorists today along the Line of Control in the Kupwara area of Jammu and Kashmir resulted in one Indian Army soldier being killed in action and four others being injured.

Officials reported that a Pakistani was also killed in the incident.

At around 2:30 am, according to officials, an Indian Army position at Kumkadi, close to the Line of Control, was attacked.

The Indian Army has not yet released a comment regarding the incident. Acording to officials, Border Action Team (BAT) of the Pakistan Army, which was involved in several operations prior to the truce between India and Pakistan being declared in February 2021, appeared to have carried out the strike.

This occurs one day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi threatened Pakistan with dire consequences and declared that the Indian Army would vanquish any terrorist threat on Kargil Vijay Diwas.

Earlier this week, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi visited the LOC in the same area to assess the soldiers’ readiness to handle terrorist strikes and infiltration.

PM Modi presided over a review meeting last month to evaluate the situation in Jammu and Kashmir amid an increase in terror events. He received a thorough briefing on the security situation in the Union Territory as well as the counterterrorism efforts being carried out by the Indian armed forces during his conversation with Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval.

Additionally, he talked with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha of Jammu and Kashmir and received an update on the initiatives being carried out by the local government. The Prime Minister has requested that the entire range of the military forces’ counterterrorism capabilities be used, according to officials.
