How hundreds of Indian students escaped violence-hit Bangladesh

Bangladesh is experiencing significant levels of tension due to the ongoing violent clashes between security forces and student demonstrators.

According to reports, police used heavy force on protestors who opposed reservations in government employment, killing over 100 individuals.

The administration of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina enforced a statewide curfew on Friday, July 19. In order to keep the peace, she has also issued an order for the military to be sent in. Many Indian students have crossed the border into the Northeast to return home amid the unrest.

On Friday, a group of about eighty medical students traveled six hours in private taxis, accompanied by security, to the border that separates West Bengal and Bangladesh.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday, July 20, more than 700 Indian students have returned home from Bangladesh, a country ravaged by violence.

Furthermore, some 200 students have used regular aircraft services via the airports in Dhaka and Chittagong to return home.

More than 4,000 students who are still enrolled in various Bangladeshi universities are receiving the support they need from the High Commission of India in Dhaka and our Assistant High Commissions, according to the statement. According to the MEA, students from Bhutan and Nepal have also received assistance traveling to India.

Numerous students from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Meghalaya, and Jammu and Kashmir were among the many who were studying in Bangladeshi medical colleges when they returned on Friday, according to media reports.

The party left their college at 2:30 am and arrived at the border six hours later; nevertheless, they did not cross until the afternoon, following immigration clearance.

On Friday, a large number of students returned via the international land ports at Dawki in Meghalaya and Akhurah, close to Agartala in Tripura.

Following restrictions on the internet and phone access on Thursday, they made the decision to return home.

125 Indian students were evacuated from Bangladesh on Friday by the Border Security Force (BSF) via Meghalaya’s Dawki integrated checkpoint, which is located along the state’s border with Bangladesh. In Tripura, the army was observed verifying the identification of returning students.

As students return by land, the BSF has also been stationed near Bangladesh’s border with West Bengal.

The Indian High Commission is collaborating with the local government to ensure that students who are eager to return home have the necessary protection.

Families of Indian nationals are advised by the MEA to get in touch with the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh. It declared on Friday that every Indian in the neighboring country was safe. The MEA also advised its citizens in Bangladesh to limit their travel outside of their homes.

According to India’s foreign ministry, about 15,000 Indians reside in Bangladesh, where 8,500 Indians are studying, many of them to become doctors. India, who supported Bengali nationalists in their 1971 fight of independence against Pakistan, has a long and complicated history with Bangladesh.

Meghalaya, which borders Bangladesh as well, is also assisting with the evacuation of people; according to officials, more than 350 students from Bhutan, Nepal, and India have entered through this route thus far. In Meghalaya, about 670 individuals—including citizens of Nepal and Bhutan—are seeking safety.

Conrad Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya, informed the media that 405 persons had been rescued so far, 80 of them were state employees.

India, with whom Bangladesh is amicably relations, has described the protests as an internal affair of Bangladesh.
