Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a first foreign trip after being sworn-in as India’s PM for the third consecutive term, is likely to meet Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of G7 summit in Italy.
India and Canada have been experiencing problems in their bilateral relations in view of the Trudeau government not taking any decisive measures against anti-India elements in Canada.
The relationship between the two nations got tensed after Trudeau accused Indian agents last September of being potentially involved in the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.
However, New Delhi dismissed the accusations as “absurd”.
India has expressed serious concerns to Canada several times, urging Ottawa to take decisive measures against anti-India elements, India’s Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said while responding to a query during a press briefing in New Delhi on Wednesday before Modi board the plane to Italy to participate in the 50th G7 summit, where Canadian Prime Minister will also be present among leaders of the world’s leading economies.
“The main issue is the political space that Canada provides to anti-India elements that advocate extremism and violence. We have repeatedly conveyed our concerns to them and we expect them to take strong action,” he was quoted as saying.
The G7 summit will be organized at Borgo Egnazia, a luxury resort in Apulia region of Italy.
The meet, which starts on June 13 an goes on till June 15, would see participation from the US, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, and Japan.
Modi is also set to meet Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for a bilateral meeting during the visit.
At the invitation of Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be traveling to Apulia, Italy to participate in the 50th G7 Summit, the Indian Foreign secretary told media persons.
It’s Modi’s fifth consecutive participation in the summit of the most economically advanced nations.
India is participating in the G7 Summit in Italy as an invited guest.
