NATO slams China, says Russia ties fueling biggest war in Europe since WW II

The obvious disdain shown by Russia for NATO’s major criticism of China coincides with a period of increased bilateral collaboration between the two nations, particularly in the wake of Moscow’s isolation and international sanctions.

Beijing had earlier joined Russia in denouncing the joint military drills between Japan and NATO members Germany and Spain. These joint military exercises were held on the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan, in close proximity to the Far East region of Russia.

The Chinese state-owned Global Times released an article quoting Chinese analysts who indicated that China was also a target of the drills, which were being manipulated by the United States, in response to Russia’s protests over the drills, which it said jeopardized national security.

NATO slams China over Russia ties

For several months, the head of NATO has denounced China for allegedly providing military assistance to Russia during its invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking at a June 2024 event organized by the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association and the NATO Association of Canada, Stoltenberg claimed that China had wrongly withdrawn from the Ukraine War despite providing aid to Russia—a move that the NATO Alliance strongly condemned.

“President Xi has made an effort to convey in public that he is not as involved in the Ukrainian crisis as he formerly was. in order to evade penalties and maintain trade. In actuality, however, China represents the biggest military confrontation in Europe since World War Two. Additionally, it wishes to keep positive ties with the West. China, though, cannot have it both ways,” Stoltenberg said.

“High-tech products with multiple uses, including as semiconductors, are being shared by Beijing. Ninety percent of Russia’s microelectronics, which are used to make missiles, tanks, and airplanes, were purchased from China last year. China is also attempting to supply Russia with better photography and satellite capabilities,” he added.

Stoltenberg declared that unless Beijing altered its methods, NATO would have to impose a cost, without offering any proof to support his claims.

“We and our allies will eventually have to impose a price if China doesn’t alter its conduct,” he asserted.

The United States has raised similar accusations. China is helping Russia achieve its military aims in Ukraine, the ambassador to NATO said in an interview with POLITICO in April of this year. Moscow is receiving supplies from Beijing, including drone technology and gunpowder ingredients.

Without holding back, Smith declared that China was providing Russia with “increasing amounts of materiel support” and that some of Moscow’s objectives against Ukraine had been accomplished with the help of their weaponry, which was purported to have both military and civilian uses.

In addition, China was accused by Britain of supporting Russia while ignoring all Western cautions. British Defense Minister Grant Shapps claimed in May 2024 that China was preparing to give Russia lethal support for use in its battle with Ukraine.

Shapps stated that his nation had proof that “lethal aid is now, or will be, flowing from China to Russia and into Ukraine, I think it is a significant development” during a conference on US and British defense intelligence held in London.

He did not, however, provide the proof needed to back up the accusations. The Chinese government keeps refuting the accusations.

The Chinese Embassy’s communications secretary in Washington, Liu Pengyu, asserted that the US was spreading misinformation about Beijing’s military support for Russia.

China retains its right to trade and economic cooperation and has accused the US of implementing unilateral sanctions under the guise of Beijing’s ties to Russia’s defense industrial complex.
