Neymar scored his first goal in his fifth appearance for Al Hilal as the Saudi club defeated Nassaji Mazandaran 3-0 on a quiet day in the Asian Champions League in Tehran on Tuesday. Barely 24 hours after fellow Saudi Arabian team Al Ittihad left Iran without playing in the game against Sepahan, four-time continental champions Al Hilal were too strong for the Iranian hosts at Azadi Stadium.

Neymar’s first goal in his first appearance

Aleksandar Mitrovic, signed from English Premier League side Fulham in the summer, scored the opening goal 10 minutes later. Neymar, who missed a penalty against Al-Shabab in the Saudi Pro League last Friday, was the target of cans and bottles thrown at him by Tehran’s home fans in retaliation for comments he made on social media criticizing field conditions. The stadium seemed to be criticized for its field.

Al-Hilal tops Group D

The former Barcelona star striker, who joined Riyadh from Paris Saint-Germain in August, silenced the crowd with a shot from the edge of the box two minutes before the hour mark. Saleh Al-Shehri added the third goal in stoppage time. With this victory, Al Hilal took the lead in Group D with four points.

The 10 group winners and the 6 runners-up with excellent results will advance to the second round. In Group A, Saudi Arabia’s Al Faiha defeated Pakhtakor 2-0, with Morocco’s Abdelhamid Sabiri scoring both goals.

On Monday, Al Ittihad refused to play against Sepahan and returned to Jeddah. This was apparently to protest a courtside bust of General Qassem Soleimani, who commanded Iran’s elite al-Quds Force before being killed in a clash with the United States in January 2020.

He was killed in his neighboring country, Iraq. The Asian Football Confederation said in a statement that the Group C match was called off “due to unforeseen and unforeseen circumstances,” without providing further details.
