Australia’s pacer, Josh Hazlewood, stood by Mitchell Marsh, minimizing the impact of the dropped catch incident involving Virat Kohli during their six-wicket loss to India in Chennai. Hazlewood defended Marsh, emphasizing that the dropped catch, occurring when Kohli was at 12, didn’t play a decisive role in the match. The mishap unfolded during Hazlewood’s bowling, as Marsh covered ground from mid-wicket, causing momentary confusion alongside wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

“No, I don’t think so (it played a role), it was quite early obviously when that catch was dropped,” Hazlewood said at the post-match press conference.

“I didn’t think Carey could get there. I think it was Mitch’s catch and probably just Carey got quite close in the end so it might have just put Mitch off,” he added.

Hazlewood further said, “Yeah, he dropped a catch, it’s one of those things that happens and everyone’s training hard and working hard off the field to hang on to them. So, yeah, we’ll continue on.”

India’s pursuit of 200 against Australia

With a target of 199 to chase, India faced a dire situation, losing three wickets for a mere two runs within the initial two overs, with Hazlewood claiming two of them. Had Marsh successfully held onto the catch, India would have spiraled into deeper trouble at 20 for four, adding immense pressure to their chase.

Virat Kohli- KL Rahul partnership

Following the early setbacks, Kohli showcased resilience, forming a crucial 165-run partnership with KL Rahul for the fourth wicket, steering India closer to a remarkable victory. Hazlewood commended the Indian bowlers, singling out left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav for his impactful performance, securing two wickets, notably that of David Warner who seemed set for a substantial innings.

Hazlewood praised Kuldeep, stating, ‘Yeah, I think he’s (Kuldeep) obviously done really well over the last 12 or 18 months. He’s always been a good player. And yeah, he’s always been a good player to play against, so I think in general the three spinners bowled really well. They’re all a little bit different obviously, but they know the conditions really well and bowled accordingly.’

In the upcoming matches, Australia is set to face South Africa in Lucknow, while India will be squaring off against Afghanistan in New Delhi.
