IND vs SL World Cup 2023: Mohammed Shami becomes India’s leading WC wicket-taker as he scalps 5-wicket against Sri Lanka

Shami's World Cup wicket tally now stands at 45 wickets in just 14 matches in the 50-over showpiece event.

On Thursday in Mumbai, Mohammed Shami achieved a historic feat for India in the World Cup. The senior fast bowler joined Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan at the top of the list of leading wicket-takers for the two-time champions. Shami displayed exceptional skill at the Wankhede Stadium, entering as a first-change bowler alongside fellow pacers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah, as they dismantled the Sri Lankan batting lineup in their 2023 World Cup match.

Mohammed Shami’s sensational bowling

Mohammed Shami made a remarkable impact by taking 4 wickets in his first 3 overs, delivering an unplayable spell of fast bowling. Shami was introduced into the attack in the 10th over of the Sri Lankan chase. By that time, the chase was almost over, with Sri Lanka struggling at 3 for 4 before slightly recovering to 14 for 4.

Shami completed his initial spell with a 5-wicket haul, marking his 3rd such achievement in World Cup history. He equaled Mitchell Starc for the most 5-wicket hauls in World Cups.

Mohammed Shami overtakes India’s bowling records

Shami’s World Cup wicket tally now stands at 45 wickets in just 14 matches in the 50-over showpiece event. Zaheer Khan took 23 matches to reach 44 wickets in World Cups, while Srinath achieved 44 wickets in 34 matches. Notably, Shami has played only 3 matches in the 2023 World Cup for India and has already claimed 14 wickets.

Here’s the updated list of the most World Cup wickets for India:

  2. Zaheer Khan – 44 wickets in 23 matches
  3. Javagal Srinath – 44 wickets in 34 matches
  4. Jasprit Bumrah – 33 wickets in 16 matches
  5. Anil Kumble – 31 wickets in 18 matches
  6. Kapil Dev – 28 wickets in 26 matches

Mohammed Shami today’s bowling

Mohammad Shami’s remarkable performance continued as he picked up two more wickets in his first over, removing Charith Asalanka and Dushan Hemantha. Shami even had a chance for a hat-trick for the second time in this World Cup, adding to Sri Lanka’s woes after India posted a challenging total of 357 on the board.

In his second over, Shami struck again, dismissing Dushmantha Chameera for a duck, caught down the leg side. KL Rahul’s smart use of the Decision Review System (DRS) helped overturn the on-field-wide decision. Shami wasn’t done yet, as he cleaned up Angelo Mathews in the first delivery of his third over, putting an end to the Sri Lankan veteran’s resistance.

Shami claimed his fifth wicket in his fifth over by dismissing Kasun Rajitha, who scored a valiant 14 in the middle. India’s pacers, particularly Shami, put on a sensational show at the venue of the 2011 World Cup final. Jasprit Bumrah set the tone with a wicket on the first delivery of the innings, becoming the first Indian to do so in a World Cup match.

Mohammed Siraj’s against Sri Lanka

Mohammed Siraj, continuing his excellent form from the Asia Cup final earlier in the year, took two wickets in his first over. In his first spell, Siraj added another wicket, sending the Sri Lankan captain back to the pavilion for just 1 run. Sri Lanka found themselves in a dire situation, struggling at 3 for 4 as they couldn’t handle India’s new-ball bowlers. Sri Lanka faced relentless pressure as Shami, introduced as the first-change bowler, claimed 4 wickets in his initial spell.
