In an unfortunate development, Team India will face another match without opener Shubman Gill, who remains sidelined due to dengue fever. Gill was ruled out of the opening match of the International Cricket Council (ICC) One Day International (ODI) World Cup 2023 against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Shubman Gill on his road to recovery from Dengue
The world’s second-ranked ODI batter, Shubman Gill, will extend his absence to India’s second World Cup match against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Although on the road to recovery and traveling with the team, his return to play hinges on upcoming medical reports. A BCCI source stated, ‘Shubman Gill is recuperating and will stay with the team in Delhi, showing hope for a return before the crucial match against Pakistan, pending further medical assessments for his participation against Afghanistan.
India’s opener struggles without Shubman Gill
In the World Cup opener against Australia, Ishan Kishan replaced Shubman Gill as the opener for India. Kishan, however, made history by becoming the first Indian opener to score a golden duck in an ODI World Cup match. Skipper Rohit Sharma also faced a similar fate, falling for a duck as India struggled at 2 for 3 while chasing 200 to win. It was up to Virat Kohli and KL Rahul to resurrect India’s chase.
Australia batting innings
Australia, opting to bat first, saw a promising second-wicket partnership of 69 runs between David Warner (41 off 52 balls) and Steven Smith (46 off 71 balls). Despite an early setback with Mitchell Marsh’s duck, the Aussies couldn’t maintain momentum after Smith’s dismissal, as India’s bowling unit excelled.
India’s bowling performance
India’s spin trio, featuring Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravichandran Ashwin, played a pivotal role in restricting Australia to 199. Jadeja claimed three wickets, supported by Kuldeep and Jasprit Bumrah with two each. The early shocks in India’s chase were overcome by Kohli (85 off 116 balls) and Rahul (97* off 115 balls), who orchestrated a resilient 165-run partnership, guiding India to a six-wicket victory over Australia.
