South African opener Quinton de Kock has been on a phenomenal run in the ODI World Cup 2023, scoring his fourth century in the tournament and becoming the first player to reach 500 runs in this edition. He achieved this remarkable feat during the match against New Zealand in Pune.
Quinton de Kock smashes 4th hundred in WC 2023
De Kock, a left-handed opener, reached his century in 103 balls, having taken 62 balls to complete his fifty. He reached the 500-run milestone when he reached 69 runs. Ultimately, he was dismissed for 114 off 116 balls. De Kock broke the 500-run barrier with a legside boundary off pacer Tim Southee and followed it up by hitting Jimmy Neesham for a six in the 36th over, marking his fourth century in the tournament.

Quinton de Kock hundreds in WC 2023
In previous matches, he had scored 109 against Australia, 174 against Bangladesh, and 100 against Sri Lanka, contributing to South Africa’s five wins in six league-stage games.
Quinton de Kock, who has already announced his intention to retire from one-day international cricket after the conclusion of the tournament, is the leading run-scorer in the World Cup, surpassing Australia’s David Warner (413) and New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra (406).
Most hundred in a single World Cup
With his fourth century, de Kock matched the record set by former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara in the 2015 edition. He is now just one century away from equaling the record held by India’s Rohit Sharma, who scored five centuries in a single edition in 2019.
Interestingly, despite their exceptional form, neither Sangakkara nor Sharma could lead their teams to victory in those editions. It remains to be seen if de Kock can guide South Africa to their maiden World Cup title.
Milestone for De Kock
In addition to his impressive run-scoring feats, de Kock has also surpassed legendary all-rounder Jacques Kallis for the most runs scored by a South African in a single World Cup edition. Kallis amassed 485 runs in nine innings in 2007, while de Kock has accumulated 545 runs in seven innings in the current edition. AB de Villiers scored 482 runs in seven innings in 2015, and former skipper Graeme Smith managed 443 runs in 2007 (10 innings). Peter Kirsten scored 410 runs in eight innings in 1992.
