Today at a high-level session of the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar will speak.
EAM S Jaishankar is in New York to lead the Indian delegation at the 78th UNGA.
On Monday in New York, EAM Jaishankar had a meeting with Dennis Francis, the president of the UNGA.
Alongside the 78th UNGA, EAM Jaishankar met his counterpart from Armenia, Ararat Mirzoyan. The two leaders declared that the two nations had a “strong bilateral relationship”.
“On the sidelines of #UNGA78, met with @AraratMirzoyan FM of Armenia. Appreciate his sharing assessment of the current situation in the Caucasus. Affirmed our strong bilateral relationship,” Jaishankar posted on X.
Jaishankar also spoke with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elmedin Konakovic. The two leaders spoke about deepening their bilateral ties, concentrating on commerce and the economy.
Jaishankar also had a meeting with Alicia Barcena, the foreign affairs secretary of Mexico.
The two presidents talked about advancing the two countries’ partnership with an emphasis on business, science and technology, education, the economy, and traditional medicine. on the margins of the event, interacting with world leaders.
Jaishankar spoke with many world leaders while he was in New York.
Jaishankar’s discussions with his colleagues, including Sameh Shoukrey of Egypt, Gen Jeje Odongo of Uganda, Constantinos Kombos of Cyprus, Carlos Pereira of Guinea-Bissau, and Abdul Momen of Bangladesh, are documented in a video posted on the social media platform X.
During his stay in New York, he also paid a visit to Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet.
The Samoan Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, his Bhutanese counterpart Tandi Dorji, Dominica’s Foreign Minister Vince Henderson, Guyana’s Foreign Minister Hugg Todd, among many others are also shown in the film with Jaishankar.
The EAM stated that economically powerful countries are exploiting production capabilities and that those countries with institutional influence have weaponized these capabilities on Saturday night during an event called “South Rising: Partnerships, Institutions and Ideas.”
The minister further emphasised that “it is still a world of double standards,” using the COVID-19 outbreak as an example.
“There is a growing sentiment in the world and the Global South in a way embodies it. But there’s also political resistance. Those occupying positions of influence are resisting pressure to change”, said EAM Jaishankar during the event hosted by the Observer Research Foundation, in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, United Nations India and the Reliance Foundation.
“They will mouth the right things, but the reality is still today, it’s a world very much of double standards,” he added.
Speaking about the Global South and India’s G20 Presidency, Jaishankar emphasised how India was “the voice of the Global South” and how it helped bring the G20’s real issue—global growth and development—to the forefront of discussion.
Jaishankar will depart from New York and proceed to Washington, DC.
On Sunday, UNGA President Dennis Francis conveyed his excitement at meeting External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at a special event “to showcase the success story of India-UN cooperation with the Global South.”
Francis spoke at the India-UN for Global South: Delivering for Development event in New York on Saturday (local time) and met EAM Jaishankar at the 78th session of the UNGA.
