G20 Summit: Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa, stated on Friday that the acceleration of the SDGs, enhancement of learning outcomes, and nutrition have been crucial for India’s presidency. He added that the New Delhi leaders’ announcement at the conclusion of the G20 Summit will reflect the voice of the Global South.
Amitabh Kant stated during a joint news conference held here prior to the G20 Summit, which starts on September 9, that India has prioritised green growth, climate action, and climate finance.
He said that according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India should be inclusive, determined, ambitious, and action-oriented during its G20 presidency.
“We were seeing decreasing global growth and productivity when India assumed the G20 chairmanship in Bali. India believed that the notion of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” or “the world is one family,” should serve as the foundation for our presidency. India should be inclusive, resolute, ambitious, and action-oriented, according to PM Modi. During our presidency, we have upheld his ideals of inclusivity, aspiration, and decisiveness,” Amitabh Kant said.
“Because only 12 of the 169 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) are on track and we are well behind schedule, having accelerated SDGs was our second top priority. The 2030 Action Point is halfway through. However, we are far behind. As a result, it was crucial for India to advance the SDGs and improve learning, health, and nutrition outcomes during its presidency,” he added.
According to Amitabh Kant, a focus has also been placed on international organisations in light of the demands of the twenty-first century.
“In terms of climate action and climate finance, we wanted the entire globe to take the lead. Green development, climate action, and climate finance were our third priority because there were various aspects of this that we wanted to drive. because financial support is necessary for both SDGs and climate action, particularly in underdeveloped and growing markets in the global south. We had to concentrate on the multilateral organisations of the twenty-first century,” Amitabh Kant said.
“The leaders of New Delhi made a statement that you will recognise as the voice of the Global South and developing nations after the Summit. No text in the world would speak so forcefully on behalf of the Global South and emerging nations,” he added.
The G20 summit will be held on September 9 and 10 in the national capital.
