Gurugram: The cybercrime teams of the Gurugram police have arrested 16 cyber criminals who defrauded people across India in 15,265 complaints worth Rs 66.62 crore, police said.
The arrested were identified as Anurag, Ashish Kumar, Chirag, Suraj Tiwari, Amit Lavania, Anupam Banarjee, Nitesh, Roshni, Karan Singh, Ruman Ali, Raman, Chandan, Isha Yadav, Saurabh, Sonu and Prateek.
The accused were arrested by different teams of the Cyber Crime Police Station of the Gurugram Police.
According to the police, after reviewing the data of the 17 mobile phones and 7 SIM cards recovered from the accused by the police from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordinate Center (I4C), it was found that the accused were involved in fraud of about Rs 66.62 crore and around 15,265 complaints were registered against them across India.
In this regard, 488 cases were registered across India. Out of these, 36 cases were registered in Haryana, including 10 in Gurugram.
“The accused used to pose as fake officials of the Fedex before indulging in sextortion and duping people on the pretext of investments,” ACP Priyanshu Diwan said.
Further action is being taken regularly on the information obtained/collected by examining the devices recovered from the arrested cyber fraudsters by the police.
Diwan said the Gurugram Police cybercrime teams are constantly taking necessary action against cyber criminals.
He said that the Gurugram police is closely working with other agencies and organisations to counter these frauds.
“We appealed to the public to steer clear of such dubious callers and advised caution in sharing personal details to strangers stalking them online,” he added.
