ICC World Cup 2023: England Test captain Ben Stokes on Wednesday returned from ODI retirement after being named in the country’s initial squad for the 50-over ICC World Cup. Talented batsman Harry Brook and fiery fast bowler Jofra Archer, however, failed to make it into the team.
The ICC World Cup 2023 will be held in India from October 5.
Ben Stokes had retired from One Day International (ODI) cricket last year saying that playing all three formats would not be practical. However, he reversed his decision to retire and national selector Luke Wright said the all-rounder’s return would add to England’s match-winning abilities at the ICC World Cup 2023.
Ben Stokes will return next month for the four-match ODI series against New Zealand. Wright confirmed that the 15-man squad selected for the series against New Zealand would be the starting squad for the World Cup. The deadline for sending the initial World Cup squad to the ICC is September 5 and changes can be made till September 28.
England’s starting squad for ICC World Cup 2023: Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley , David Willey, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes.
