PM Modi to visit US amidst strained ties

Amidst sanctions imposed by US President Donald Trump and nuclear sabre rattling by Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit the United States next month.

While the visit is for the United Nations General Assembly meet, PM Modi is widely expected to engage in a dialogue with Donald Trump and thrash out important issues that have plagued relations between India and the United States in recent times.

The last meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Donald Trump took place in February this year when PM Modi visited the US.

Preparations for PM Modiโ€™s visit to the United States are reportedly underway and are likely to be finalised by the end of this month.

PM Narendra Modi is expected to travel to theย United States in September 2025ย for theย 80th UN General Assembly (UNGA)ย in New York.

Alongside UNGA, he may hold a bilateral meeting withย President Donald Trump, though this has not yet been officially confirmed.

Relations between the US and India became strained after Donald Trump imposed 25% tariffsย on Indian goods last month. The US also increased tariffs to 50 percentย on imports of Russian oil affecting India indirectly, as it is a major buyer.

Negotiations on both trade issues are underway, and Modiโ€™s meeting with Trump could focus on.ย Strains have also emerged after Trump claimed to haveย brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan โ€” a claimย denied by New Delhi.

The US has reiterated through State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce that its relationships withย both India and Pakistan remain unchanged.

Pakistan Army chiefย General Asim Munirย made aggressive remarks in Florida, suggesting Pakistan could resort toย nuclear weapons against Indiaย in case of an existential threat.

The US highlighted thatย Vice President JD Vance, President Trump, and Secretary of State Marco Rubioย were actively engaged in preventing escalation during the recent conflict.

PM Modi has recently spoken toย Russian President Vladimir Putinย andย Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with Zelensky hinting at a possibleย personal meeting with Modi in September during UNGA.

The UNGA session runs fromย 9โ€“23 September 2025, with theย High-Level General Debate from 23โ€“29 September.
