Amidst sanctions imposed by US President Donald Trump and nuclear sabre rattling by Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit the United States next month.
While the visit is for the United Nations General Assembly meet, PM Modi is widely expected to engage in a dialogue with Donald Trump and thrash out important issues that have plagued relations between India and the United States in recent times.
The last meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Donald Trump took place in February this year when PM Modi visited the US.
Preparations for PM Modi’s visit to the United States are reportedly underway and are likely to be finalised by the end of this month.
PM Narendra Modi is expected to travel to the United States in September 2025 for the 80th UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Alongside UNGA, he may hold a bilateral meeting with President Donald Trump, though this has not yet been officially confirmed.
Relations between the US and India became strained after Donald Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Indian goods last month. The US also increased tariffs to 50 percent on imports of Russian oil affecting India indirectly, as it is a major buyer.
Negotiations on both trade issues are underway, and Modi’s meeting with Trump could focus on. Strains have also emerged after Trump claimed to have brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan — a claim denied by New Delhi.
The US has reiterated through State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce that its relationships with both India and Pakistan remain unchanged.
Pakistan Army chief General Asim Munir made aggressive remarks in Florida, suggesting Pakistan could resort to nuclear weapons against India in case of an existential threat.
The US highlighted that Vice President JD Vance, President Trump, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were actively engaged in preventing escalation during the recent conflict.
PM Modi has recently spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with Zelensky hinting at a possible personal meeting with Modi in September during UNGA.
The UNGA session runs from 9–23 September 2025, with the High-Level General Debate from 23–29 September.
