Sunil Gavaskar fumes at BGT ceremony

After Australia defeated India in the five-match rubber, veteran Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar complained that he was not invited to give the border-Gavaskar trophy to Australia. He and seasoned Australian cricketer Allan Border are the namesakes of the prize.

“I would have loved to attend the presentation, no doubt,” Gavaskar was quoted by Code Sports as saying, “After all, it’s the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it’s about Australia and India.”

The cricket legend complained that even though he was at the location, he was not invited to the trophy presentation.

“I mean, I’m on the ground here. In my opinion, the fact that Australia prevailed in the presentation shouldn’t matter. They won because they played better cricket. “It’s okay,” he said. “Just because I am an Indian… I would have been happy to present the trophy with my good friend Allan Border,” Gavaskar stated.

Since 1996โ€“1997, Australia and India have been vying for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and their rivalry has intensified to rank among the most intense in Test cricket. Australia defeated India by six wickets in the last Test to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar trophy after a ten-year absence. At the Melbourne Cricket Ground last week, the five-match series surpassed an attendance record of 87 years and attracted record audiences at other sites.
