Asian Games 2022: Indian squash team bag gold after thumping win over Pakistan

India won the gold medal in the men’s squash team event by defeating Pakistan 2-1 at the Asian Games 2022. Abhay Singh won the gold medal for India by defeating Pakistan’s Zaman Noor 11-7, 9-11, 7-11, 11-9, 12-10 in the third match of the squash men’s team final. Saurav Ghoshal defeated Muhammad Asim Khan in the first match, while Mahesh Mangaonkar lost to Nasir Iqbal.

Building on that momentum, Ghoshal took the next two games convincingly by 11–1 and 11–3 margins. Abhay Singh then met Noor Zaman at the end of the match and made a tight start with an 11-8 win. Tempers flared in the second game when Singh and Zaman were tied at 5-5. After another tense rally, the match ended with a draw of 7:7. After a few more matches, Noor defeated Zaman Singh and won the second match 11-9. The third game also started intensely, with both players tied 3-3.

Before Singh led by four points. But after a few comebacks, Zaman surged ahead to take a 9-7 lead before closing at 11-7. With Pakistan leading 2-1, Zaman and Singh meet for the second time. In the first match, Noor Zaman led 6–4 until Abhay Singh came back to register another tight 11–9 victory. The medal decider then saw Zaman and Singh battle it out for the third and final time. The final match was full of exciting moments as both players tied the score 8-8. Then, when Singh found a small gap, he used a 12-10 victory to clinch the gold medal.

India last won the men’s team squash gold at the 2014 edition of the Games in Incheon, while the Pakistanis last won gold in 2010 in Guangzhou. The medal was India’s 10th gold medal at the Asian Games and 36th overall. Earlier in the competition, the women’s team had won the bronze medal.

With the win, India managed to improve on their bronze medal from the 2018 Jakarta Games. It also completed India’s revenge for the group stage loss at the hands of the same opponent. The medal was India’s 10th gold of the Hangzhou Games and 36th overall. Earlier, the women’s team won bronze in the competition.
