The second-largest freshwater lake in China has experienced a dike break, forcing 5,700 inhabitants to be evacuated as rescuers raced to stop more overflow damage, according to official state media on Saturday.
Following Friday’s breach across a 226-meter (740-foot) stretch in Hunan province, more than 2,300 rescue workers were constructing a second line of defense against flooding, according to China Central Television.
According to accounts, as of early Saturday, no one had been hurt. State-run media captured footage of a surge of water pouring through a dike break, past numerous overturned trucks, and into pools that engulfed multiple dwellings.
The Miluo River in Pingjiang county of China swelled to its greatest level in 70 years earlier this week as a result of heavy rainfall that hammered areas of Hunan province.

The highest emergency response level was activated by the local authorities in response. Large portions of towns were under water, and state media showed trapped individuals being rescued by boats.
According to China’s Ministry of Water Resources, water levels at Poyang Lake in Jiangxi province were also being closely monitored on Tuesday.
