WhatsApp makes new change, blocks profile picture screenshots on Android

As part of a new privacy feature that is widely available on Android phones, WhatsApp has started to prevent users from taking screenshots of other users’ profile pictures on smartphones. Meta tested this feature for a few weeks on the app’s beta version before making it available to all users.

In the meantime, the company has started to let beta testers pin multiple messages in WhatsApp chats, making more information easily accessible in individual or group chats.

The privacy feature that prevents screenshots from being taken in a user’s profile image area has not yet been disclosed by Meta. Android Police discovered the rollout, and as a result, users of WhatsApp for Android’s stable and beta versions are no longer allowed to screenshot other users’ profile photos. Both the regular and beta versions of WhatsApp for iOS allow users to take screenshots.

Gadgets 360 was able to verify that, on a Samsung smartphone, WhatsApp prevents screenshots of the profile image due to the device’s security policy. On a Pixel 7a, however, trying to take a screenshot while a user’s photo is open results in an entirely black screen.

It’s crucial to remember that the function that prevents screenshots from being taken of a user’s WhatsApp profile picture does not ensure that another user won’t be able to save the image. The user may still use another smartphone to take a picture of the screen where the image is displayed despite the additional functionality.

Similarly, WhatsApp does not prevent screenshots when a user’s profile photo is tapped in the main chat list; instead, a tiny thumbnail appears.

The option to pin several messages at the top of a WhatsApp chat is one of the changes that WABetaInfo, a feature tracker, noticed in the most recent beta version of the Android app.

Currently, WhatsApp users can only pin one message at a time, but three messages will be able to be pinned at once in a future release. Beta testers who update to WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.6.15 can already try out the enhanced feature. At a later time, it is anticipated to launch for all iOS and Android users.
