Lok Sabha Election 2024: TMC worried as survey predicts BJP surge in West Bengal

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and its supremo West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee are under pressure ahead of the Lok Sabha Election 2024  due to the Sandeshkali controversy and intra-party discord.

Now the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and its supreme leader Mamata Banerjee will be burdened by another bit of worrying news as News18’s Mega Opinion Poll has predicted that the BJP-led NDA may win 25 of the 42 seats in West Bengal in the forthcoming Lok Sabha Election 2024.

According to the survey, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Mamata Banerjee, is expected to win 17 seats, while the NDA is predicted to win with a 42 percent vote share in West Bengal.

West Bengal sends the third largest number of representatives to the 543-seat Lok Sabha, behind Maharashtra (48) and Uttar Pradesh (80).

Mamata Banerjee, the supreme leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), had earlier announced that her party would run a solo campaign in West Bengal for the Lok Sabha Election 2024 after negotiations over seat sharing with the Congress broke down.

All 42 of the state’s candidates were revealed by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) a few days ago. Key contenders include actor Shatrughan Sinha from Asansol, former cricketer Yusuf Pathan from Berhampore, Gopal Lamba from Darjeeling, Abhishek Banerjee from Diamond Harbour, and Mahua Moitra from Krishnanagar.

With the intention of giving Trinamool Congress (TMC) a serious fight in West Bengal, the BJP has announced the names of candidates for 20 seats. Notable individuals among them are Nisith Pramanik (Cooch Behar), Subhas Sarkar (Bankura), Shantanu Thakur (Bongaon), Jagannath Sarkar (Ranaghat), Khagen Murmu (Maldah North), and Locket Chatterjee (Hooghly), the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

It is anticipated that the BJP will be the main contender against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal in the forthcoming Lok Sabha Election 2024.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) had secured 22 seats in West Bengal in the 2019 Lok Sabha Election, while the BJP had given them a massive fright by winning 18 constituencies. Their respective vote percentages were 43.3 and 40.7.

However, in the state assembly elections of 2021, Mamata Banerjee had led the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to a landslide victory, winning an astounding 215 seats. Even with their intense campaigning, the BJP could only muster 77 seats. But this win was a significant divergence from the BJP’s comparatively meek showing in the 2016 West Bengal Elections, where they only managed to secure three seats.

West Bengal is electorally one of the most influential states in India and a good showing in the state will give the BJP a crucial advantage in the eastern region of the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has indicated that the BJP wants to win 370 seats on its own in the upcoming Lok Sabha Election 2024. Even a small gain in the party’s 2019 total of 18 seats will help them come closer to his goal.

Mamata Banerjee doesn’t see this election as a make-or-break situation because the Trinamool Congress (TMC) would still be in power in West Bengal till 2026. But a large increase in her party’s number of MP seats may establish her as the main opposition figure in the Lok Sabha.
