India defence exports boom amid war in Europe

India has dismissed claims that Indian artillery shells sold to countries in Europe have reached Ukraine to be used in the war against Russia

With war drums rolling on in Europe and no end in sight to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the growing demand for 155mm artillery shells from European countries has turned the private defence sector of India into massive industrial powerhouse.

In order to meet the increasing demand for this essential munition around the world, domestic defence enterprises who were previously solely focused on exporting empty shells have greatly increased their production.

India’s capacity to make 155mm shells is expected to increase significantly; by the fiscal year 2027, it is anticipated that the private sector alone will generate more than lakh shells yearly. This astounding number highlights the explosive growth of the domestic industry as it does not include the results of projects in the public sector.

In addition to meeting India’s domestic needs, the expanded production will also leave extra for export. This excess manufacturing capacity strengthens India’s position as major force in the world ammunition market and increases its influence both strategically and economically.

The Indian private sector’s rise to prominence as leading manufacturer of 155mm shells is evidence of the nation’s manufacturing competence and capacity to seize international possibilities. As the sector grows, it is anticipated to create large number of job opportunities and boost India’s GDP considerably.
