New Delhi: The American pop and jazz singer Tony Bennett died at the age of 96, his publicist conveyed the news on Friday. Bennet became the torchbearer for the Great American Songbook during a seven decade career.

The 1962 hit song I Left My Heart in San Francisco and Bennett’s incredible career return in the 1980s and 1990s, which kept him popular far into his old age, are possibly his two most well-known works.

He has more than 50 million recordings under his belt and 19 Grammy wins to his name, including a lifetime achievement award in 2001. It was revealed in 2020 that he had received an Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2016. “Life is a gift – even with Alzheimer’s,” he wrote on Twitter.

He was found to be able to sing a wide variety of his repertoire despite having decreased cognitive function.
