World Cup 2023: ICC issues reprimand, demerit point to Afghan opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz for misuse of equipment during historic win

Gurbaz showcased a stellar performance, scoring the highest half-century of 80 runs, contributing significantly to Afghanistan's total score of 284 runs.

In a thrilling encounter at Arun Jaitley Stadium on 15th October during the ICC World Cup 2023, Afghanistan clashed with England, resulting in a significant victory for Afghanistan. However, the joyous moment for Afghan opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz was marred by an unfortunate incident. Gurbaz showcased a stellar performance, scoring the highest half-century of 80 runs, contributing significantly to Afghanistan’s total score of 284 runs.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz penalised by ICC

However, his elation was short-lived as he faced severe reprimand for violating the ICC Code of Conduct Level 1. Gurbaz, a 21-year-old batsman, was found to be in breach of Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct against Players and Support Personnel, concerning the improper use of cricket equipment, ground equipment, and fittings during an international match.

In consequence, Gurbaz has been penalised with one demerit point, which marks his first offense in a 24-month period. He admitted to the offense, obviating the need for a formal hearing.

Reason why Rahmanullah Gurbaz penalised

After being run out in the match against England, Gurbaz displayed visible frustration with himself. In a moment of anger and disappointment, he began striking his bat against the ground as he left the field. This display escalated further as he damaged the advertising board on the boundary line with his bat and vociferously expressed his frustration by hitting a chair in the dugout.

While his batting performance was commendable, Gurbaz’s emotional outburst highlights the pressure and intensity that players experience on the international stage. It serves as a reminder of the need for players to channel their emotions constructively and maintain composure even in challenging situations.
