WATCH: Rishabh Pant paints VVS Laxman face with cake as former batter celebrates his 49th B’day

Amidst the joyous atmosphere, Pant, in retaliation, took a substantial piece of the cake and applied it to Laxman's entire face.

As former India batter and the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), VVS Laxman, celebrated his 49th birthday on Wednesday, Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant marked the occasion in a festive manner. In a video shared by Pant on X (formerly known as Twitter), Laxman, who had an illustrious career representing India in 134 Tests and 86 ODIs, amassing 8781 and 2338 runs, respectively, donned a black hat and cut a birthday cake. Laxman then playfully smeared some cake on Pant’s face.

Amidst the joyous atmosphere, Pant, in retaliation, took a substantial piece of the cake and applied it to Laxman’s entire face. Axar Patel was also seen joining the celebrations at the NCA.

Axar Patel at NCA

Axar Patel had been ruled out of India’s World Cup squad in September due to a quadricep tear sustained during the Asia Cup Super Four match against Bangladesh. He has been undergoing rehabilitation at the NCA since then.

Rishabh Pant’s accident

Rishabh Pant’s return to competitive cricket has been delayed for nearly a year following a severe car crash in December 2022. He is currently in the process of rehabilitation at the NCA. Pant’s recovery has been remarkable, considering the severity of his situation.

Tournament misses by Rishabh Pant

During his absence, Pant missed several major tournaments, including the Indian Premier League, the World Test Championship final against Australia, and the Border-Gavaskar series. In July, he began batting in the nets, raising hopes of a comeback in time for the Asia Cup 2023 and the ICC ODI World Cup. However, he couldn’t make it to those tournaments.

India without Rishabh Pant

Pant’s absence was a significant setback for Team India, but they have been enjoying a stellar run in the World Cup, winning all six of their matches. In their previous game, India convincingly defeated defending champions England, led by Jos Buttler, by a margin of 100 runs. India will secure a spot in the semifinals if they emerge victorious in the World Cup match against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday.
