Explained: As Angelo Mathews dismisses by ‘Time out,’ HERE what exactly is ICC rule

"Timed out" is a method of dismissal in the sport of cricket that occurs when an incoming batsman is not ready to play within three minutes of the previous batsman being dismissed.

In cricket, there are various ways a batter can be dismissed, and one of the rarest forms of dismissal is known as ‘timed out.’ During the ICC ODI World Cup match held in New Delhi between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Angelo Mathews made history by becoming the first cricketer to be dismissed via the ‘timed out’ rule in an international match. This unique dismissal occurs when a batter fails to take their position at the crease within a specific time frame after dismissal or retirement, as defined by the cricketing rules.

Angelo Mathews becomes first player to be dismissed by timed-out

Angelo Mathews, who was due to bat at No. 6 for the Sri Lankan cricket team, encountered an issue with his helmet and was unable to take his position at the crease within the stipulated time. As per cricket’s rules, a batter should be ready to receive the next delivery within a specific time frame after dismissal or retirement. In Mathews’ case, he faced a problem with his helmet strap.

Bangladesh’s team captain, Shakib Al Hasan, raised the issue with the umpires, claiming a timed-out dismissal. The umpires discussed the situation with Mathews, as well as with the Bangladesh team, before eventually declaring Mathews out according to the timed-out rule. This made Angelo Mathews the first player in international cricket to be dismissed in this manner.

What is Timed Out?

“Timed out” is a method of dismissal in the sport of cricket that occurs when an incoming batsman is not ready to play within three minutes of the previous batsman being dismissed. This rule is in place to ensure that there are no unnecessary delays to the game. It is quite unusual for a batsman to be given out in this manner. As of November 2023, there has been only one instance of this type of dismissal in one-day international cricket, and no such instances in Test match cricket. However, there have been six instances in first-class cricket as a whole.

What is Timed out law?

According to Law 40 of the Laws of Cricket, the incoming batsman must be in a position to take guard or for their partner to be ready to receive the next ball within three minutes of the fall of the previous wicket. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batsman can be given out, timed out, on appeal.

The “incoming batsman” may be any batsman who has not yet batted in the innings. There is no prescribed batting order in cricket. If no batsman has set foot on the field when the appeal is made, the batting captain can nominate any player who has not yet batted as the one to be given out. As a result, if the next batsman is only slightly delayed, the captain is expected to sacrifice the batsman who is considered the worst, typically the No. 11.

In the case of a protracted delay in which no batsman comes to the wicket, and the umpires believe that the batting team is refusing to play, the umpires can award the match to the other team. However, if no player comes to the wicket because all eligible players are unable to bat, such as due to injury or illness, they are not given out timed out. Instead, the innings are declared closed, and “absent ill/injured/hurt” is noted next to those players’ names.

In T20 cricket

In Twenty20 cricket, the rules specify that a batsman must be on the field within 90 seconds, rather than the three minutes specified in the Laws. To accommodate this requirement, the batsman next in is positioned on a boundary bench rather than in the pavilion. This is similar to the practice in some other team sports such as association football and rugby.
