“I just wanted to finish cricket, take a break, give myself time to think, and figure out where I want to be.”
Meg Lanning ends her career on a high note
After achieving almost everything in her career, Meg Lanning needed a different and fresh perspective on life. That’s why he began a reckless hiatus from all cricket after Australia won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. In a completely different game, Lanning worked as a barista in a cafe in Melbourne, where she washed dishes, made coffee, and interacted with her customers with a big smile.
Meg Lanning wants to enjoy other things
“Just walking in and not knowing what the day is going to be like – maybe it’s busy, maybe it’s quiet,” and having different conversations with customers, it was really cool. Stepping away from the routine of running Australia to enjoy a new role in the everyday life of the common man, Lanning tried not to let his mind get bogged down by things beyond his control.
“Working in a coffee shop allowed me to do that and I had fun.” Lanning’s plan for a second in life was evident when, in the midst of a flurry of career success, he did something he didn’t expect himself to do.
“I never thought I would take a break from the game, it wasn’t something I expected to happen, I just played and I really enjoyed the game and I always did. Then came the dreaded day!”
“I realized I’ve probably spent the last 18 months trying to convince myself of why I keep playing and what I want to achieve.” Although she took part in the inaugural edition of the WPL in March, Lanning’s opinion was whether or not to continue playing cricket. Although he made a comeback, the legend would not be seen in an Australian shirt again.

Meg Lanning’s domestic career
On Thursday morning, Lanning decided to draw the curtains on his illustrious 13-year international career. In September, Lanning returned to professional cricket in the WNCL and signaled a return to play in Australia. She wasted no time in getting to his crease as he smashed a half-century for Victoria against Western Australia. Currently playing in the WBBL, Lanning manages the Melbourne Stars. The fact that he scored 75 runs against the Hobart Hurricanes when he faced Shabnim Ismail, Molly Strano and others showed that Lanning had not lost her touch at all.
Road ahead for Australia after Lanning’s retirement
Australia is scheduled to tour India in multiple formats later this year and Lanning will not be part of that tour. They are likely to be led by Alyssa Healy, although Cricket Australia has yet to make an official announcement. On several occasions, Lanning pulled the Australians out of places where they appeared dead and buried. Opponents knew that if they gave him a chance, he would run at it.
Lanning and Dhoni captaincy comparision
MS Dhoni is considered a global icon as he is the only captain in men’s cricket to win all three ICC awards. Dhoni had already quit test cricket before the World Cup started. But in world cricket, which has both men and women, there is no captain who can match Lanning. As a captain, Lanning won four T20 World Cup titles (2014, 2018, 2020, and 2023), and one ODI World Cup title in 2022. She won the Women’s Ashes in 2015, 2019 and 2022. With the second pen, she won the gold medal after Australia defeated India in the CWG final at Edgbaston last year. As captain, Lanning won 146 out of 179 matches. After becoming Australia’s captain at the age of 21, Lanning never looked back and collected one laurel after another.
Meg Lanning’s international career
At 18 years and 288 days, he became the youngest Australian to score an ODI hundred against England’s formidable bowling attack.
