ENG vs NED World Cup 2023: Ben Stokes slams maiden WC hundred against Netherlands

Ben Stokes reached his maiden World Cup century by executing a reverse sweep against Paul van Meekeren, sending the ball towards the third-man region

Ben Stokes reached his maiden World Cup century by executing a reverse sweep against Paul van Meekeren, sending the ball towards the third-man region at the Maharastra Cricket Association stadium in Pune on November 8 against the Netherlands.

Maiden World Cup century for Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes completed his maiden World Cup century in just 78 balls by playing a reverse-sweep shot off the bowling of fast bowler Paul van Meekeren in the 48th over of England’s innings. This was his fifth century in One-Day International cricket. Stokes’ previous best performance in the ODI World Cup was an 89-run innings off 79 balls against South Africa at The Oval in 2019. He also scored 89 off 115 balls against Australia at Lord’s during the same tournament. Despite announcing his retirement from the format in July of the previous year due to a heavy workload as an all-format player, Stokes came out of retirement in August of the following year to participate in England’s title defense in the World Cup.

England’s batting

England’s skipper Jos Buttler, made the decision to bat first. The team got off to a fantastic start with Dawid Malan playing some exceptional shots, particularly a flurry of boundaries, which led to him achieving his fastest ODI fifty in just 36 balls.

Joe Root dismissal

On the other hand, Joe Root took a more cautious approach and was content to play a supporting role. However, Root was eventually dismissed after attempting his trademark scoop shot, and a miscommunication between the two batsmen led to Malan being run out. With both set batsmen out, England’s momentum began to wane, and they went from 133-1 to 192-6.

Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes partnership helped England to put goog total

Ben Stokes, however, remained undeterred by the fall of wickets at the other end. He partnered with Chris Woakes to mount a solid recovery. Stokes absorbed the pressure and then accelerated at the right moment to reach his maiden World Cup century. This exceptional performance seemed to inspire Woakes, who also played his part and reached a half-century. Thanks to their 129-run partnership, England now finds itself in a commanding position.
