WATCH: Angelo Mathews creates unwanted record as he becomes first player to be dismissed by ‘time-out’

Angelo Mathews made an unwanted mark in cricket history by becoming the first player to be dismissed 'timed out' in international cricket.

In Sri Lanka’s ICC World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh in Delhi, Angelo Mathews made an unwanted mark in cricket history by becoming the first player to be dismissed ‘timed out’ in international cricket. This unusual occurrence took place as a result of an issue with Mathews’ helmet strap, which prevented him from being ready to bat within the stipulated three minutes of dismissal, following Sadeera Samarwickrama’s wicket on the second ball of the 25th over.

Angelo Mathews faces a helmet issue

Sri Lanka is facing Bangladesh, who had won the toss and opted to bowl first. After some early wickets, Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama stabilized the innings. When Samarawickrama was dismissed, Angelo Mathews walked out to bat, but he faced an issue with his helmet strap, leading to a delay.

Shakib Al Hasan appeals for Time-Out dismissal of Angelo Mathews

During this delay, Shakib Al Hasan discussed with the umpire regarding the time Mathews was taking. The Bangladesh captain then appealed to the umpires for a timed-out dismissal. After a discussion with the umpires, Mathews was given the marching orders, even though he pleaded his case, showing the broken helmet strap and explaining the situation to the umpires and Shakib.

What is the Time-Out rule by the ICC

The incident was governed by the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 playing conditions concerning “timed-out” dismissals. According to these rules:

  • After a wicket falls or a batter retires, the incoming batter must be ready to receive the ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement unless Time has been called. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.
  • In the event of an extended delay in which no batter comes to the wicket, the umpires shall adopt the procedure of Law 16.3 (Umpires awarding a match). For that Law, the start of the action shall be taken as the expiry of the 3 minutes referred to above.

Angelo Matthews appeals but failed

Despite Mathews’ protests, the decision stood, making him the first batter in international cricket to be given a timed-out dismissal.
