Following a humiliating loss to India in the 2023 World Cup, Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe took significant action on Monday by dismissing the entire Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board. The defeat, which saw Sri Lanka lose by a staggering 302 runs in Mumbai on November 2, led to widespread public outrage and calls for the resignation of the SLC administration led by Shammi Silva. Protests were held outside the SLC headquarters, demanding the Silva administration’s resignation and the tension escalated to the point where riot police were deployed to protect the building.
Arjuna Ranatunga appointed as interim head of Sri Lanka cricket
In response to these demands and the growing crisis, Minister Ranasinghe swiftly appointed an interim seven-member committee to oversee Sri Lankan cricket. The committee is led by former World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga and was established under the authority of Sports Law No. 25 of 1973.

The committee includes three retired judges, two of whom are women, and former SLC chairman Upali Dharmadasa. Arjuna Ranatunga’s return to a leadership role in Sri Lankan cricket is notable, as he had been critical of the Silva administration’s management. He had previously led a similar interim committee in 2008.

Shammi Silva had been elected as the SLC chief in May for his third consecutive term, initially set to run until 2025. However, the recent turn of events has dramatically reshaped the landscape of the Sri Lankan cricket administration.

This loss to India was Sri Lanka’s second consecutive poor performance in ODIs, following their defeat in the Asia Cup final in Colombo on September 17, where they were dismissed for just 50 runs. Their heavy defeat to India in the World Cup not only represented an embarrassing performance but also dashed their hopes of qualifying for the semifinals. With just two wins from seven games, Sri Lanka is currently struggling at 7th place, one spot below Afghanistan in the tournament standings.
